In India, the government has been implementing a plan to prevent poliomyelitis to children under five years of age in all states.
The Polio vaccination Camp started today free for around 17 million children across the country, A total of 43 thousand and 51 centers have been set up in Tamil Nadu and 70 lakh children have been provided with polio drops. In Chennai Corporation alone, 7 lakh children have been provided with polio drops.
The polio vaccination center will operate from 7 am to 5 pm. Polio drops should be given to children under 5 years of age. The first phase of Pulse Polio Immunisation programme started today on 28th January. The next Oral polio vaccine should be given on March 11th.
India was declared polio-free on 27 March 2014.
In this case, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami has started Polio vaccination camp today. Health Minister Vijaya Bhaskar, Radhakrishnan and Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan also participated in this event.
In India the last case of wild poliovirus was recorded on 13 January 2011.
However India has completed more than six years since the last case of wild poliovirus was reported in 2011. Country remains at risk of poliovirus importation till the whole world is free of polio virus.India maintains a sensitive surveillance system for polio.
Government launches pulse polio programme for 2018
In this regard, it has been decided to conduct National Immunization Days for polio for the years 2018 on 28th January 2018 and 11th march 2018 with bivalent Oral Polio Vaccine(bOVP) said Doctor Pradeep Haldar in his letter to the principal Secretary of all states.
